Kids thrive when they get to be in nature and immersed in play. So we gather together to do just that!

We’ll meet at several child-friendly outdoor locations in Bellingham, WA to play and explore. The Play Project’s summer camps include structured activities and adventures, as well as time for open-ended play. We’re outside all day, every day! On any day we are likely to: hike, run, dig, climb on rocks or logs, watch clouds, tell and read stories, bushwhack, build shelters, make art, explore new trails, play group games, problem solve, try something new, build trust and connection with each other, and learn about plants and critters we encounter along our way.

Our camps are open to kids ages 5—12 years. There are opportunities for both mixed-age and age-specific activities and adventures during each day. Group size is limited to 14 participants/day with a 1:4 adult to child ratio.

Our daughter has participated in The Play Project since 2022. Kelsey and her staff are attuned, inclusive, and provide an amazing space for kids to explore relationships: with themselves, with each other and with the natural environment. What has really impressed me is how cohesive each group has felt, with kids falling into easiful rhythms of play, exploration, nourishment, and rest, all in the spirit of wonder and delight. Kelsey creates a space with clear boundaries that help everyone feel safe and welcome. Our daughter looks forward to camp season all year and The Play Project is our top choice!

The Play Project gave Eli the space to be a kid playing and exploring in the woods with friends of all ages. After a summer with Kelsey and their team of counselors, Eli showed increased independence all around, a new confidence playing with new friends, and a knowledge about plants, fort building, and engaging outdoor games. Eli says...”The Play Project is fun because of the hiking, the kids, and Capture the Flag.”

Both of my kids absolutely loved their time at The Play Project! Every day was an adventure filled with laughter, creativity, and connection. They came home brimming with stories about exploring nature, making new friends, and creating beautiful outdoor art. The camp gave them a deep appreciation for the outdoors, and they thrived in an environment that encouraged curiosity and play. Kelsey and the entire crew have been incredibly supportive of our family over the years, especially in the indicate transition of summer schedules. Their kindness, dedication, and passion for what they do make this camp truly special. We are so grateful for the community they’ve built and the lasting memories our kids have made. So thankful for this supportive community and environment over the past several years!

Kelsey knows about the magic of being a child. She goes at their speed and encourages them to be curious, play, and learn. Having my kids be outside and running around for camps fills them up with friends and nature. My kids have loved coming to The Play Project!

Meet the 2025 Play Project Staff

Fiona Ferguson (she/her)
Lead Facilitator

My name is Fiona and I grew up in Sitka, Alaska! I am set to graduate from WWU with an Art Education degree in the fall.
I love working with kids, and had so much fun as a reading tutor at Lowell Elementary, a workshop facilitator at the Whatcom Museum, and a counselor at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp! My creative hobbies include painting, printmaking, and making silly little crafts in my room. I love dipping in the ocean (any time of the year!), hiking, looking at plants, and making fairy houses.

Ave Richter (she/her)
Lead Facilitator

I love creating and exploring! I connect with the world through goofiness, smiles, and real emotion. I tend the joke universe and feel excited to get creative with the kiddos in the forest this summer. I meet people and young ones with compassion, presence, and a thrill for what’s possible. This is my 3rd summer as a summer camp facilitator and my 2nd summer with the Play Project! Wishing for a summer of joy and play!

Kelsey Maloney (she/her)
Program Director & Facilitator

I founded The Play Project in 2021.
My favorite parts of camp include: lunch story time, skits, hide ‘n seek games and watching kids grow their confidence and comfort in nature. Not to mention wading into the warm waters of mud bay looking for sand dollars. I’ve worked with kids since I was a teenager—at summer camps and environmental education centers across the US and Australia.
